What is an apostille?
An apostille is a certificate issued by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the 1961 Hague Convention, confirming the authenticity of a public document so that it is legally recognised in other member countries (125+ nations). Once an apostille is attached, no further legalisation by the destination country’s consulate is required.
What is the difference between an apostille and embassy legalisation?
If the destination country is a signatory to the Hague Convention, an apostille is sufficient. For non-signatory countries — such as China, the UAE or parts of India — documents must first receive MOFA Confirmation of Seal, then be legalised by the relevant embassy in Tokyo. The correct route depends on the receiving country and institution; please feel free to enquire.
Can I use your services from outside Tokyo, or from overseas?
Yes. Our service is fully remote — documents are handled entirely by post, email and LINE. We will accept instructions from anywhere in Japan and from clients residing overseas, provided a domestic representative in Japan is available if required.
How long does the process take?
Apostille applications submitted by post to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs typically take 3 working days as standard. Embassy legalisation timelines vary by embassy but generally require 1–2 weeks. An express plan will be available for urgent cases after opening. Please contact us to discuss your timeline.
